Bynon to head immunology, organ transplant
Dr. Giuseppe Colasurdo has announced J. Steve Bynon Jr., M.D., as the new director of the Division of Immunology and Organ Transplantation in the Department of Surgery. In his role, Dr. Bynon will be responsible for leading the programs in liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation. He also will serve as Abdominal Organ Transplant Program director at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center.
“Dr. Bynon is renown is his field and exemplifies the UT spirit of caring. I have no doubt he will lead our program to new heights and his outcomes will be second to none,” Dr. Colasurdo says.
Dr. Bynon comes to UT Physicians and the Medical School from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where he served as director of the Liver Transplant Program for 17 years at the UAB Hospital and as the director of the Pediatric Renal and Liver Transplant Program for 18 years. He held the Arnold G. Diethelm Endowed Chair of Transplantation at the UAB School of Medicine from 2005 to 2011.
He has been involved with more than 3,000 transplant surgeries, including over 1,500 liver transplantations, and his renal and pancreatic transplant experience includes nearly 1,700 patients. Bynon’s transplant experience also includes almost 300 pediatric renal transplants and over 150 pediatric liver transplants during his tenure at UAB. His outcomes for patient and graft survival have been statistically higher than national benchmarks.
A native of Tennessee, Dr. Bynon received his medical degree at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences. He completed his residency in surgery at UAB Hospital and a fellowship in organ transplantation at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
Dr. Bynon’s honors include The Award of Excellence for Exemplary Commitment to Caring from the University Hospital, Alabama Honoree for Outstanding Achievement in the Treatment of Liver Disease from the American Liver Foundation, and he is recognized in Best Doctors in America. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, American Society of Transplantation, International Liver Transplantation Society, and the Society for Organ Sharing.
