Sean Savitz, M.D., UT Physicians neurologist, recently received the Molly and Bernard Sanberg Memorial Award from the American Society of Neural Therapy and Repair (ASNTR).

Dr. Savitz, director of the UT Physicians Vascular Neurology Program, received the honor in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of brain repair after stroke, according to the ASNTR. He was cited for his work in developing novel therapies for ischemic stroke, as well as his pre-clinical and clinical research focused on cell-based therapies such stem cells to enhance recovery from stroke.

In the ASNTR announcement of the award, Dr. Allison Willing, a previous recipient of the Bernard Sanberg Memorial Award for Brain Repair, praised Dr. Savitz’s work. “Dr. Savitz is a true physician scientist,” said Dr. Willing, professor in the Center for Excellence in Aging and Brain Repair at the University of South Florida. “He works with stroke patients every day, but it is not enough for him to just treat them or make them comfortable. He has worked tirelessly in his preclinical studies to define the best methods to treat his patients and is the first principal investigator to initiate clinical trials using autologous bone marrow cells for the treatment of stroke.”

Dr. Savitz received the award in late April at the 19th annual conference of the ASNTR in Clearwater Beach, Fla.
