Hunter wins Caldwell Award
Dr. Robert Hunter, chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, is the 2010 recipient of the George T. Caldwell Distinguished Service Award from the Texas Society of Pathologists.
Established in 1954, the award recognizes distinguished service and teaching excellence among pathologists and is the organization’s most prestigious award. The award represents the highest ideals in service to medicine, community, and humanity as exemplified by the late pathologist Dr. George T. Caldwell.
Hunter has served as chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine since 1997. He earned M.D., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Chicago, completed an internal medicine internship at the Boston City Hospital, completed a pathology residency at the University of Chicago, and served two years as a commissioned officer in the Public Health Service.
In 1985, in partnership with Steve Gorlin, a venture capitalist, Hunter founded CytRx Corporation to develop medical applications of synthetic polymers. CytRx had two successful public offerings and developed several projects that were licensed to Burroughs Wellcome and Merck. In May 1994, the Robert L. Hunter Pharmaceutical Development Center in Norcross, Georgia, was named in recognition of this work with the governor of Georgia presiding over the dedication ceremony.
Hunter has published more than 150 research papers and is named as inventor on more than 30 patents. He has served on national committees and has held leadership positions in many professional organizations, most notably as president of the Association of Clinical Scientists and as chair of the Immunology Council of the American Society for Clinical Pathology. In 2003, he was awarded the Philip Levine Award for Outstanding Research by the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
