Psychiatry resident named diversity leadership fellow
Dr. Nubia Lluberes, a third-year psychiatry resident, has been selected as an American Psychiatric Association (APA) Diversity Leadership Fellow.
A nationally competitive award, fellows are selected on the basis of their commitment to serve ethnic minority populations, their awareness of the importance of culture in mental health, their interest in the interrelationship between mental health/illness and transcultural factors, and their demonstrated leadership abilities.
The two-year resident fellowship started July 1 and is funded by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals.
As part of the program, Lluberes will attend three national meetings and work on one of nine APA councils or three committees.
“They will release the information about what council will I be working with in July, and then I will be required to work on a particular project or task assigned by the chairperson, attend the meetings, and participate fully in the work of the council,” she explained. “This is a great opportunity for me to be involved with the leadership of APA.”
Lluberes graduated Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, her home country. She completed an internal medicine residency program in the Dominican Republic before coming to UT to pursue psychiatry studies.
“My plans after graduation are to do a fellowship in forensic psychiatry, get specialized training in psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, and start research work on bipolar disorder and creativity. Bigger plans will come with the experience from the fellowship!” she added.
The APA is a medical specialty society with more than 38,000 members worldwide with a mission to promote the highest quality care for individuals with mental disorders and their families.
