Flu cases down as coronavirus cases spike

Even though flu activity has been slow so far this season, it's wise to receive a vaccination, especially as we deal with spikes in the coronavirus.

As coronavirus cases continue to surge locally and across the country, there is some better news to report on the flu.

According to Luis Ostrosky, MD, an infectious disease expert with UT Physicians, the Houston area and Texas as a whole have seen little to no flu activity since the season officially started in September.

“Perhaps this is a good sign that all the COVID-19 precautions are helping to curb the flu,” said Ostrosky, also a professor of medicine and vice chair for Healthcare Quality at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. “But it’s too soon to really see a trend, and our weather hasn’t been particularly cold. We definitely should not let our guard down.”

If you haven’t received your flu shot, there still is time. It’s highly recommended by experts that you do so. Getting vaccinated against the flu can still reduce flu illnesses and doctors’ visits, as well as prevent hospitalizations, which will be especially important as the health care system continues to care for patients with COVID-19.

You can still take advantage of the UT Physicians offer of $19 flu shots at participating clinics. These locations include:
