Regional mitochondrial disease symposium set for Feb. 12-13
Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital and McGovern Medical School Mitochondrial Center of Excellence will host the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation Regional Symposium Feb. 12 and 13.
Clinical and medical sessions will be held Feb. 12 at Hotel Zaza with patient/family sessions set for Feb. 13 at Hermann Pavilion Conference Room.
Mitochondrial diseases are more common than previously recognized, and mitochondrial pathophysiology is now a recognized part of many disease processes, including heart disease, cancer, AIDS, and diabetes. Significant advances have been made in the molecular genetics, proteomics, epidemiology, and clinical aspects of mitochondrial pathophysiology.
The course’s planning is chaired by Mary Kay Koenig, M.D., UT Physicians pediatric neurologist associate professor of pediatrics, Mitochondrial Clinic director, and Tuberous Sclerosis Center co-director. The Children’s Hospital Medical Center of Akron designates this activity for a maximum of 6.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
