Severe or Uncontrolled Asthma in Adults
UT Physicians Allergy and Immunology – Texas Medical Center provides a comprehensive, patient-centered approach to asthma care for adults. Patients undergo comprehensive allergy testing, pulmonary function testing, and detailed assessments to identify triggers and optimize guideline-directed therapy.
Testing services include:
- Spirometry – This pulmonary function test (PFT) assesses lung function. It aids in diagnosing and managing conditions such as asthma.
- Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) – Noninvasive and quick, this test measures lung inflammation. It is particularly useful for monitoring asthma and assessing airway inflammation.
- Allergy testing – Allergies can often trigger asthma symptoms. Skin prick testing can be done during a patient’s visit and may help identify potential triggers for asthma.
Common triggers:
- Colds and viruses
- Outdoor air pollution
- Smoke exposure
- Pollen
- Pets
- Dust mites
Our dedicated nurse asthma educators work closely with each patient to ensure they understand their condition and how to manage it. This service is designed to help patients control their asthma symptoms, reduce exacerbations that could lead to emergency room visits or hospitalizations, and improve patients’ overall quality of life.
