UT Physicians is proud to share that Oscar Ybarra is the 2025 UT Physicians Employee of the Year.
“I am shocked and surprised, but I’m happy,” said Ybarra, a cardiovascular sonographer at UT Physicians Cardiology – Texas Medical Center. “It’s a big honor, and I appreciate it.”
Professional skill
As a sonographer, Ybarra conducts cardiac ultrasounds, playing a critical role in helping physicians diagnose patients with heart disease and determine treatment plans.
“He is amazing at what he does and is very skilled,” said Susan T. Laing, MD, a cardiologist at UT Physicians Heart & Vascular – Bellaire Station and medical director of echocardiography and the John Edward Tyson Distinguished Professor in Cardiology at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. “It’s critical that a cardiac sonographer knows what they’re doing because they are front and center in diagnosing these conditions. They need to be able to capture the pictures needed for the reading cardiologist to make the correct diagnosis. Oscar has the skill and understands the science behind the heart condition he is imaging.”
Commitment to patient care
Ybarra is also passionate about patient care. Known for his calm, friendly disposition, he takes pride in explaining the echocardiogram process to each patient and in capturing the best images while keeping them comfortable.
“Oscar provides care with outstanding expertise and genuine human warmth. He is known for his ability to put patients at ease, offering reassurance, clear explanations, and simple comforts like a warm blanket,” said Cynthia Huehlefeld, interim chief operating officer, UT Physicians. “He excels in his role, while also elevating the experience for every patient and colleague.”
12 honorees celebrated

The annual ceremony recognizes and reflects on the 12 UT Physicians Employee of the Month winners, celebrated for their outstanding dedication and service to patients, colleagues, and the UT Physicians mission.
“This year, we had an incredible group of Employee of the Month honorees whose work and service set a high bar for all of us to follow,” Huehlefeld said. “Our UT Physicians team members show up every day with commitment, compassion, and professionalism. Our organization is strong because of this dedication to our patients and each other.”

Triple crown winner
Earning the Employee of the Year honor is a triple crown moment for Ybarra, who was previously named the October 2025 Employee of the Month and September 2025 Heart of Excellence winner for his ability to connect with patients, earning their trust through kindness, compassion, and genuine interest.
“Oscar is known for the exceptional care he provides to patients. He treats every patient like family and consistently approaches them with respect,” said Dawit Gemechu, cardiovascular imaging manager, UT Physicians. “He treats patients the way he wants to be treated, and that philosophy is evident in every interaction.”
“Each patient is different. Sometimes they start out grumpy, but when they leave, they leave with a smile,” Ybarra said. “I love what I do, and it’s humbling to know that I am just a small part, but to me it’s very important.”
