What is pancreatic cancer?

Pancreatic cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow out of control and form a tumor on the pancreas, a gland located deep in the abdomen that plays an important role in digestion and blood sugar regulation. Because the pancreas sits behind other organs, pancreatic cancer often does not cause symptoms in its early stages. Many people are diagnosed after the disease has begun to grow or spread. When found early, pancreatic cancer may be treated successfully with surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or a combination of these approaches. The most common type of pancreatic cancer is pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, which begins in the ducts of the pancreas. Risk factors for pancreatic cancer

Some people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer have no known risk factors. However, certain conditions and lifestyle factors may increase risk. Symptoms of pancreatic cancer

These symptoms should be evaluated by a medical professional.

Diagnosis of pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic cancer is typically diagnosed using a combination of advanced imaging and specialized procedures. This may include CT scans, MRIs, endoscopic ultrasound, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. A biopsy is often performed to confirm the diagnosis, and blood tests may provide additional information. Treatment of pancreatic cancer

Treatment depends on the type of tumor, the stage of the disease, whether the cancer can be removed surgically, and your overall health and personal goals. Depending on the location of the cancer, procedures may include the Whipple procedure, distal pancreatectomy, or a total pancreatectomy.

Chemotherapy may be used before surgery to shrink a tumor, after surgery to reduce the risk of recurrence, or as the primary treatment when surgery is not possible. Radiation therapy is sometimes combined with chemotherapy to help control the disease. Some patients benefit from targeted therapies based on the genetic features of their tumor. Clinical trials may provide access to promising new treatment options.
