Prostate Health Care

Caring for the prostate starts with understanding the conditions affecting this vital gland and providing expert treatment tailored to the unique needs of patients. Led by a board-certified, fellowship-trained endourologist with extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and other noncancerous prostate conditions, we emphasize minimally invasive outpatient procedures with short recovery times and excellent outcomes.

Conditions treated

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

A common, noncancerous enlargement of the prostate, BPH can cause urinary symptoms such as a slow stream, frequent urination, urgency, and incomplete bladder emptying.

Urinary retention

Urinary retention is the inability to empty the bladder completely or at all. It can be caused by an enlarged prostate, bladder muscle dysfunction, or nerve-related issues. Symptoms may include difficulty starting urination, weak stream, or the need to urinate frequently. We offer a range of diagnostic tools and treatments — from medications to minimally invasive procedures — to restore normal bladder function and prevent long-term complications.

Urinary symptoms in patients with prostate cancer

Some men with prostate cancer — especially those on active surveillance, or preparing for focal therapy or radiation treatment — may experience bothersome urinary symptoms due to prostate enlargement. We specialize in managing these symptoms to improve comfort and urinary flow, supporting your overall prostate cancer treatment plan. Treatment options are tailored to your individual needs and may include medications, office procedures, or minimally invasive surgical techniques.

Elevated PSA and prostate cancer screening

A prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test is used to help detect prostate problems, including the early signs of prostate cancer. An elevated PSA may not always mean cancer, but it does warrant further evaluation. Our team offers a comprehensive approach to PSA screening, interpretation, and follow-up care, including advanced imaging and targeted biopsies when necessary.

Overactive bladder (OAB)

This condition is characterized by a frequent and urgent need to urinate, sometimes with leakage (urge incontinence). It is often related to bladder muscle overactivity rather than prostate size.

Prostate-related lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS)

LUTS includes a group of symptoms related to bladder outlet obstruction due to prostate enlargement, including hesitancy, straining, dribbling, or weak urine flow.

Bladder stones

Bladder stones are hard mineral buildups that form in the bladder, often due to incomplete bladder emptying or urinary retention. Symptoms may include painful urination, frequent urination, blood in the urine, or lower abdominal discomfort. Treatment usually involves breaking up or removing the stones using minimally invasive techniques. We identify the cause and offer treatment options to prevent recurrence.

Office-based diagnostics

We offer a full suite of diagnostic tools to understand your symptoms and guide your treatment:

  • Cystoscopy: a small camera to inspect the inside of the urethra and bladder
  • UroCuff test: a noninvasive assessment of bladder pressure and flow
  • Urodynamics: an advanced evaluation of bladder storage and voiding function
  • Ultrasound: used to measure prostate size and assess bladder function
  • Post-void residual measurement: a quick scan to determine how effectively the bladder empties after urination
  • Uroflowmetry: a simple, noninvasive test that measures the speed and volume of urine flow to assess stream strength and bladder emptying
  • Home uroflowmetry: a convenient, at-home version of the test using specialized devices to monitor your urine flow over several days for more accurate treatment planning

Treatment options

Our treatments are tailored to your prostate size, symptom severity, overall health, and personal preferences:

Medical therapy

  • Alpha-blockers: help relax the prostate muscles to improve urine flow
  • 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors: shrink the prostate by blocking the hormone responsible for its growth
  • Combination medications: a treatment approach that helps relieve symptoms through multiple pathways

Minimally invasive surgical therapies (MIST)

  • UroLift®: These small implants lift the prostate tissue and relieve pressure on the urethra, allowing for quick recovery while preserving sexual function.
  • Rezūm® water vapor therapy: This treatment uses steam to shrink prostate tissue through an in-office procedure with minimal downtime.
  • Advanced minimally invasive surgical options
    • Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP): This laser technique removes large amounts of tissue with minimal bleeding and long-term symptom relief. It is a minimally invasive option that provides durable results.
    • GreenLight® laser vaporization: This procedure uses a laser to remove excess prostate tissue with minimal bleeding. It is performed on an outpatient basis and offers fast recovery.
    • Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP): Considered the gold standard for treating moderate to severe symptoms, this procedure removes obstructive tissue caused by an enlarged prostate.
