This section provides a few quality and research training opportunities for residents and faculty. Residents and trainees should reach out to their department directors for specific guidance on their program’s training offerings and resources, as this list may not be comprehensive.
Quality improvement resources
Clinical quality, safety and evidence-based medicine scholarly concentration for medical students
- Offered by the Office of Educational Programs at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, this course has two missions:
- Teach students how to apply the principles of safe and evidence-based care
- Introduce students to research methods for generating the robust evidence that defines quality and safe health care
- Maximum number of students per year: 10
- Co-directors: Eric Thomas and Donald Molony
- Student selection process: Each student will write a 250-word essay about why they wish to pursue a scholarly concentration in this area of study.
Research resources
Honors Research Program: Students seeking a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) at Cizik School of Nursing at UTHealth Houston can gain valuable research skills and experience working alongside a faculty mentor on a scholarly research project through the Honors Research Program.
Postdoctoral fellowships and other resources: Several helpful resources are available, including new postdoctoral positions, library access, work/life support, campus maps, a shuttle tracker, a compliance hotline, and information on such shared resources as core labs and research service centers.
Fellowships and special programs: Fellowships and programs at UTHealth Houston School of Public Health offer predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships for current and incoming students, as well as an undergraduate research experience.
Other resources
Texas Center for Healthcare Quality Innovation (TCHQI): The TCHQI was established in late 2013 through the state of Texas’ Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP) program as a collaboration between UTHealth Houston and Memorial Hermann – Texas Medical Center. The TCHQI has worked on improvement initiatives in inpatient and ambulatory settings.

Quality team: Housed in the Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine, the quality, efficiency, and safety team (QUEST) meets monthly to discuss issues pertaining to value-based care, process improvement, and patient safety.
Research, presentation, and QI opportunities: Presentations and programs for research and QI within the Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine include;
- Clinical Research in Progress Seminar Series (C-RIP): An hour-long presentation is held the second Wednesday of each month by a faculty member discussing research topics.
- Surgical Services Safety Workshops: An annual mandatory Surgical Services Safety Workshop is held to integrate error-prevention practices into our culture and to discuss expected safety behaviors and practice behaviors for error prevention to provide safe care to our patients and their families.
