The Robert Cizik Eye Clinic is proud to share that its office-based surgery (OBS) program has received Joint Commission accreditation.
“We are very excited for this important recognition,” said Betsy Rollins, senior practice manager for the Cizik Eye Clinic. “This proves our hard work to elevate patient safety, reduce risks, and demonstrate excellent patient care has paid off.”
What is office-based surgery in ophthalmology?
Office-based surgery (OBS) is a type of surgery a patient might have in an ambulatory surgery center, such as a hospital, but performed in the clinic instead.
Common ophthalmology surgeries performed as OBS include:
- Cataract surgery
- Eyelid lifts
- Oculoplastic surgery
- Some cornea procedures
Benefits of OBS
An OBS at the Cizik Eye Clinic means the patient arrives for their surgery at the same clinic where they know the front desk staff, nurses, and health care team. Surrounded by friendly faces, there is also a reduced cost, as no facility fee is charged. Oral sedation and topical anesthesia replace traditional anesthesia, resulting in a faster recovery time.
What is Joint Commission accreditation?
The Joint Commission is a national third-party organization that accredits organizations and programs through a diligent and thorough review process. Accreditation is only given to programs that demonstrate a commitment to the highest standards of health care quality and patient safety.
Why accreditation is critical for eye surgery safety
The Cizik Eye Clinic received OBS accreditation in December 2025 after meeting 1,500 criteria.
“This lets our patients and the community know that our facility and providers meet high standards and we must continuously adhere to those standards,” Rollins said.
Patient impact

In 2024, Evonne Aboderin was diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes.
“I chose to have surgery on my right eye first, which required going into a hospital for outpatient surgery,” Evonne said.
She was under the care of Ahmad Kheirkhah, MD, an ophthalmologist with the Robert Cizik Eye Clinic – Texas Medical Center. By the time she scheduled surgery for her left eye, she was able to use the new OBS option at Cizik Eye Clinic.
“The results were excellent for both surgeries, but my experience between the two surgeries was quite different,” Evonne said. “The office-based surgery was very smooth, personal, and faster.”
Walking into a familiar setting and having surgery performed in the same office where she regularly sees her provider made her feel like she was at home.
“I had no anxiety at all with OBS,” Evonne said. “From the check-in process through the end of the procedure, it was less overwhelming than being in an ambulatory setting. I highly recommend OBS.”
Our commitment to excellence in eye surgery
Launching the OBS program offers patients the same expert care the Cizik Eye Clinic is known for, in the comfort of a setting they’re familiar with. Now, with Joint Commission accreditation, patients can trust that OBS is a high-caliber experience that adheres to the highest standards of quality and patient safety, as verified by a third-party national organization.
“Patients love this option,” Rollins said. “I’ve met with many of them before and after their surgeries, and they tell me often they prefer OBS.”
