Dawn Hui, MD, is a board-certified thoracic surgeon, specializing in adult cardiac surgery with a focus on aortic surgery, valvular surgery, and coronary surgery.
Dr. Hui’s patient care philosophy emphasizes a collaborative, patient-centered approach that blends specialized expertise with teamwork and shared decision-making. Her primary goal is to continually improve the lives of patients, families, and the community through excellence in clinical care combined with an evidence-based approach.
Dr. Hui received her Doctor of Medicine in 2005 from UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Prior to medical school, she earned a certificate in premedical sciences from Columbia University. She completed her first residency in 2010 in general surgery at UT Southwestern and her second residency in 2013 in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Upon completing her training, she joined the faculty at Saint Louis University in Missouri as an assistant professor. In 2019, she joined UT Southwestern Medical Center as an associate professor of cardiothoracic surgery and was later promoted to professor and vice chair of quality and research.
Dr. Hui is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an active member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. She’s also an editor and reviewer and serves on the boards of numerous academic and medical journals.
Her research, which is focused on clinical outcomes, has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, industry, and private foundations. She has authored more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals, as well as book chapters, and has presented nationally and internationally.
Dr. Hui has received numerous awards, including being named a peer-nominated top surgeon. She is committed to improving cardiovascular health clinically and through leadership, serving as past president of the Board of Directors for the American Heart Association’s San Antonio chapter and on the Board of Advisors for the Society of Thoracic Surgeons’ national advocacy organization.
Prior to her medical career, Dr. Hui studied violin performance at Oberlin College in Ohio and graduated from The Juilliard School in New York City.
