Gastroenterology

UT Gastroenterology is the physician group practice of The University of Texas Medical School at Houston’s Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.

Representing the best in their field, UT Gastroenterology physicians provide high quality effective care for patients with disorders of the colon, esophagus, liver, pancreas and stomach. We offer endoscopic and non-endoscopic procedures, lithotripsy and the services of a swallowing and heartburn center. Our multidisciplinary team of specialists provide diagnosis, treatment, education and management related to conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, motility problems, malabsorption, acid reflux and indigestion, inflammatory bowel disease, peptic ulcers, Crohn’s disease and pancreatitis.

Procedures including upper and lower diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, ERCP, papillotomy, polypectomy, capsule endoscopy, single and double-balloon enteroscopy, esophageal, small bowel, and ano-rectal motility and intestinal and liver biopsies are carried out in fully equipped outpatient clinical gastroenterology suites with fluoroscopic capabilities.

Outpatient gastroenterology services are seen at the UT-Memorial Hermann Digestive Disease Center located in the UT Professional Building, the UT Health Center Building in Bellaire and the LBJ Hospital gastroenterology clinic. Patients with liver disease including those being evaluated for liver transplantation or followed after liver transplantation are seen at the UT- Memorial Hermann- Texas Liver Center and the LBJ Medicine clinic for gastroenterology.

In most cases, we cannot accommodate walk-in patients. The best way to see a doctor is by scheduling an appointment. If you have an urgent need, please call the Nurse Line at (713) 704-5910.

Insurance, Payment and Billing

UT Physicians is a preferred provider for most managed care plans. We will verify your insurance coverage prior to your office visit.

We will file your insurance claim for you. You will be responsible for co-payments, co-insurance and deductibles at the time of your appointment. We accept cash, checks and all major credit cards including American Express, Visa, MasterCard and Discover. If you do not have medical insurance, payment in full is due at the time of the visit.

Referrals

Your insurance plan may require referral paperwork or other authorization for visits to specialists. Please have referral when you call to schedule appointment

Calls for routine requests are returned within 24 hours. Requests for urgent medical care are returned the same day.

If you have an urgent medical need, please call (713) 704-5910 and a triage nurse will assess your medical need. If medically necessary, you will be worked into a physician’s schedule the same day.

For after hours care, please call (713) 500-6677 to reach the physician on-call.

In case of emergency, please call 911 or go immediately to the nearest hospital emergency room.

Test Results

If patients have had a procedure scheduled as a result of a clinic visit and have had a biopsy, we ask them to follow up in clinic in 2 weeks. If they did not, we mail results to them. If they have lab work done and all is normal, we do not call or send results and tell patients they will not hear from us if all is normal. We ask them to call us if they specifically want a copy of normal labs mailed to them.
