Several vaccines associated with reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease in adults 65 and older

Prior vaccination against tetanus and diphtheria, with or without pertussis (Tdap/Td); herpes zoster (HZ), better known as shingles; and pneumococcus are all associated with a reduced risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease, according to new research from UTHealth Houston.

UTHealth Houston set to enroll patients for two long COVID clinical trials through NIH

Two clinical trials that will evaluate drugs, biologics, medical devices, and other therapies for long COVID that are sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will launch at UTHealth Houston. 
The UTHealth Houston site will be led by Luis Ostrosky, MD, professor of medicine and epidemiology, division director of infection diseases, and Memorial Hermann Chair at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.

UTHealth Houston study on seasonality of teen suicidality in JAMA Network Open

The incidences of teen suicidality including self-harm, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts increased nationally between 2016 and 2021; were at seasonal high peaks in April and October; and were at their lowest when schools were shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to research at UTHealth Houston.

Women less likely to be routed to comprehensive stroke centers for large vessel acute ischemic stroke, according to UTHealth Houston research

Despite having worse stroke symptoms and living within comparable distances to comprehensive stroke centers, women with large vessel occlusion acute ischemic stroke are less likely to be routed to the centers compared to men, according to a new study from UTHealth Houston.

Different areas of the brain activated depending on structural complexity of music, language

Distinct, though neighboring, areas of the brain are activated when processing music and language, with specific sub-regions engaged for simple melodies versus complex melodies, and for simple versus complex sentences, according to research from UTHealth Houston.
