James C. Melville, DDS, FACS, is a board-certified and fellowship-trained oral and maxillofacial surgeon concentrating on oral, head, and neck oncology and microvascular reconstructive surgery.
He’s also a professor in the Bernard and Gloria Pepper Katz Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry.
Melville graduated from the University of Michigan Dental School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 2005 and completed an oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the University of California-San Francisco in 2006. He completed a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery in 2012, followed by fellowship training in oral, head, and neck oncology and microvascular reconstructive surgery in 2014 at the University of Miami. He was appointed director of oral and maxillofacial internship at UTHealth Houston in 2017.
Melville served as the president of the Oral & Maxillofacial Section of the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research/International Association for Dental Research in 2023. He was appointed the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Clinical Interest Group president for neurologic disorders in 2023. He served as a scientific committee member of the International Academy of Oral Oncology 2022 conference.
Melville is a diplomate of and examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Academy of Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons, the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the American College of Surgeons. He has been invited as a visiting professor and lecturer at over 15 academic institutions.
He has written five textbooks on maxillofacial reconstruction and contributed to 35 textbook chapters concerning oral and maxillofacial surgery, oncology, maxillofacial reconstruction, microvascular reconstruction, and tissue engineering. In addition, he is the author of more than 80 articles in peer-reviewed journals and a reviewer for several well-respected journals.
