Martin J. Citardi, MD, an internationally recognized rhinologist, currently serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at McGovern Medical School (MMS), part of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Under Dr. Citardi’s leadership, the Department has grown from a single physician faculty member to 19 full-time physician faculty members, plus 7 audiologists.
In 2019, Dr. Citardi was appointed Vice Dean for Clinical Technology. In this role, he serves as project co-sponsor for UTHealthCONNECT, UTHealth’s EHR implementation effort. This project executed the implementation of a comprehensive electronic health record for both clinical information and practice management. Dr. Martin J. Citardi has championed the project’s governance structure as well as organizational transformational efforts, both of which were integral to project success. In 2023, he championed the creation of the UTHealth Houston Center for Digital Healthcare Innovation, whose goal is the sustenance of an end-to-end, integrated, patient-centric EHR for support of care delivery, education, and research.
Dr. Martin J. Citardi received his Doctor of Medicine degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed his residency training at Yale University and then pursued a rhinology fellowship at the Georgia Rhinology & Sinus Center. Dr. Citardi is certified by the American Board of Otorhinolaryngology, and he is a fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology, the American College of Surgeons and the American Rhinologic Society.
The American Academy of Otolaryngology has presented Dr. Martin J. Citardi with its Honor Award in 2003 and its Distinguished Service Award in 2007 and 2017. In 2003, Dr. Martin J. Citardi received the American Rhinologic Society Presidential Award. Singapore Ministry of Health named Dr. Martin J. Citardi an Honorary Visiting Expert in 2004. Since 2005, Dr. Martin J. Citardi has been listed among the Best Doctors in America. He received a Cleveland Clinic Innovator Award in 2007. Dr. Martin J. Citardi has been a Houstonia Top Doctor since 2014, Castle Connolly Top Doctor since 2013 and a Texas Super Doctor since 2012.
Dr. Martin J. Citardi has been invited to speak at medical meetings in Europe, Asia and South America. He frequently presents at national otolaryngology meetings throughout the US, including active participation at each American Academy of Otolaryngology annual meeting since 1996. He has over 100 publications, and he has edited a textbook on computer-aided otorhinolaryngology. Dr. Martin J. Citardi has served as Director and Information Technology Officer for the American Rhinologic Society.
At McGovern Medical School, Dr. Martin J. Citardi has championed the creation of subspecialty programs that combine clinical care, research and education. The Department hosts the Texas Sinus Institute, Texas Skull Base Physicians, and Texas Center for Facial Plastic Surgery, and sponsors programs in pediatric ENT, otology, and head and neck oncologic surgery. Dr. Martin J. Citardi has led the development of 3 clinical offices with a total of 24 exam rooms, 6 audiology booths and a procedures suite for the Department.
Dr. Citardi initiated the EHR Governance Committee for UT Physicians (the faculty practice) and served as its chair for 3 years. In this role, he co-chaired the EHR Replacement Request for Proposal Committee, which oversaw the bidding and selection process for the most expensive acquisition in the history of the medical school. Dr. Martin J. Citardi also served on the board for UT Physicians during 2009-2016.
As chief of otorhinolaryngology at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, Dr. Martin J. Citardi has lead the establishment of Houston’s largest hospital ENT service. US News & World Report ranked Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center at #19 in Adult Ears, Nose & Throat in the 2018-2019 Best Hospitals Rankings. He was chair of the OR committee there for 2012-2015. Dr. Martin J. Citardi has been on the board of MHMD, the physician organization of Memorial Hermann Health System, since 2010. In addition, Dr. Citardi has played active roles on several MHMD committees, including Otolaryngology, Ambulatory Medical Informatics and System Medical Informatics. He has also been on the board of Memorial Hermann Surgery Center-Texas Medical Center, an ambulatory surgical center located at the Texas Medical Center.
Dr. Martin J. Citardi’s clinical practice focuses upon disorders of the nose and sinuses. His special clinical interests include refractory sinusitis, revision sinus surgery, CSF rhinorrhea, computer-aided surgery (image-guided surgery), and minimally invasive anterior skull base surgery.
