Colorectal Surgery and Cancer

Treatment for colon or rectal cancer depends on the location and stage of the cancer. If colorectal surgery is indicated, our surgeons in Houston provide full oncologic resection in a purely laparoscopic fashion, commonly known as minimally invasive surgery, which minimizes scarring and recovery time.

Our surgeons have advanced training in these minimally invasive colorectal surgery techniques and in surgical oncology. For colorectal cancer, we believe that a coordinated effort between surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists is important in order to ensure that every patient gets optimal, personalized treatment.

Colorectal Cancer Screening

Colon cancer screening detects precancerous lesions in the colon so that they can be treated before they become cancerous and require colorectal surgery or other more dramatic solutions. Colonoscopy is the preferred method for colon cancer screening.

Current colon cancer screening recommendations include:

  • Colonoscopy at our Houston offices every 10 years beginning at age 50.
  • For African-Americans, colonoscopy every 10 years beginning at age 45.

Consult with a physician about when to start screening if you have any of the following risk factors:

  • A personal history of colorectal cancer or adenomatous polyps
  • A personal history of inflammatory bowel disease
  • A strong family history of colorectal cancer or polyps
  • A known family history of hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes, such as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) or hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer (HNPCC)

Colorectal Surgery and More for Diverticular Disease in Houston

Diverticular disease is a common condition that is characterized by a weakness in the wall of the large bowel. This weakness can form pockets called diverticuli, which can cause bleeding or become inflamed. This condition is called diverticulitis. Often, diverticuli cause no symptoms, but if diverticulitis symptoms are present, they may include irregular bowel movements, abdominal pain, passing of blood in stool, and rectal bleeding. Some people develop peritonitis, which occurs when the inflammation spreads to the abdominal lining.

Diverticular treatment in Houston is available. Colorectal surgery is sometimes needed for problems related to diverticulitis and, when indicated, generally involves removing a small portion of the large bowel to prevent further complications of the disease. Houston diverticular disease specialists approach these cases with minimally invasive, state-of-the-art techniques that result in the shortest recovery time possible, even when colorectal surgery is called for.

Treatment for Hemorrhoids in Houston

Symptoms of a hemorrhoid can include pain, bleeding, or swelling in the lower portion of the rectum or anus. Hemorrhoids are very common, and result from increased pressure in the veins of the anus, which causes the veins to swell painfully. Common causes of hemorrhoids include straining during bowel movements, constipation, sitting for long periods of time, and anal infections. Hemorrhoids may occur either inside or outside of the body.

There are many treatments for hemorrhoids, including the application of medicines, rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy, coagulation, mucosal resection, and traditional hemorrhoidectomy, a form of colorectal surgery. During a consultation with one of our Houston hemorrhoid doctors, we explain your treatment options and provide you with the tools you need to determine the best possible treatment for you. We then provide you with colorectal surgery in Houston as necessary and monitor you throughout your recovery.
